Crystal clear twin headlights on a black car

Headlight Restoration in Castle Rock, COCan you see the road or just the haze?

Headlight lenses haze and yellow under UV, and a cloudy lens throws less light at night. We sand, polish and seal them clear again.

Headlight Restoration, the way we do it.

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic, and plastic does not get along with sun. UV breaks down the surface until the lens hazes, then yellows.

UV is strong at altitude, and the Denver metro sits around a mile high. Lenses feel it. A cloudy lens throws less light at night, which is when headlights earn their keep.

Restoration sands and compounds off the damaged, oxidized outer layer of the lens. The lens is then polished clear and sealed, because bare restored plastic starts to haze again.

A restored lens can also be coated, which adds a layer of protection on top. Our Platinum coating level includes headlight lens correction.

What is included

Headlight Restoration: what happens on the day.

  1. 01

    Lens check

The haze is checked for depth and tint, and the lens is checked for cracks or crazing before any sanding starts.

  2. 02

    Wash before sanding

The lens and the paint around it are washed first, so loose grit never gets sanded into the plastic.

  3. 03

    Sanding and compounding

The oxidized outer layer is sanded and compounded off, because that layer is where the yellow and the cloud live.

  4. 04

    Polishing to clear

The lens is polished until it is clear edge to edge, then checked under light for leftover haze.

  5. 05

    Sealing the lens

A seal goes on once the plastic is clear, since bare restored polycarbonate is open to UV again.

  6. 06

    Coating, if you want it

A restored lens can be coated for extra protection. Ask about it, or about our Platinum level.

Hazy, yellow or cracked?

The lens tells us how much work it needs. Surface haze is the easy case, and deep yellow takes heavier sanding before the polish.

Cracks and crazing are different, because sanding cannot repair a lens that has split. Send a daylight photo of each headlight and we will say what we see.

Light haze
The lens looks foggy but not yellow. A light sand or compound, then polish and seal, is the usual route.
Yellowed
Deeper oxidation with an amber tint. It takes heavier sanding before the polish, then a seal.
Cracked or crazed
Spidering or cracks sit in the plastic itself, so a new lens may be the better fix. Send photos and ask.

How booking works

Four steps from first text to finished.

  1. 01

    Call or text

Send a daylight photo of each headlight to (970) 518-0600, with the year, make and model.

  2. 02

    Pick the spot

The work happens where the car is parked, anywhere in our eight Colorado counties. Ask about pairing it with a detail.

  3. 03

    Sand, polish, seal

The old surface comes off, the lens is polished clear, and a seal goes on to guard it from UV.

  4. 04

    Keep it clear

Wash the lenses with the rest of the car each month, and ask about our maintenance plans.

Why it matters

Cloudy plastic scatters part of the beam inside the lens, so the road ahead gets less of it.

FAQ

Headlight Restoration questions.

Something else? Call or text (970) 518-0600.

Why do headlights turn yellow?

The lens is polycarbonate plastic. UV breaks down its surface until it hazes, then yellows, and the sun at a mile high is strong. Cars that sit outside take the most of it.

Can a cloudy lens really be made clear?

In most cases, yes. The cloud sits in the damaged outer layer, and that layer is sanded and compounded off. A lens with cracks, crazing or deep damage is the exception, so send photos and ask.

Will the haze come back?

Bare plastic starts to oxidize again, so the lens is sealed after polishing, and a coating adds more protection. How long it lasts depends on the sun it sees and how the lens is cared for.

Is this part of a coating package?

Headlight lens correction is part of our Platinum coating level. It can also be booked on its own, or next to a detail. Call or text what you want done and we can plan one visit.
